Earth Day – Coral & Mangrove Planting Date: 22 April 2019

A full day of hands-on environmental activities for Earth Day 2019 saw staff and guests from Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort join forces and make a difference. Protecting at-risk marine life, the natural beauty of Phi Phi and the rich biodiversity of the Andaman Sea is an absolute priority. The focus of the proactive day, this April, was on coral and mangrove regeneration, essential for the survival of keystone species. Aimed at creating better environmental awareness, the latest Responsible Tourism events add to ongoing ocean clean-up and conservation initiatives run by the resort.

A team of 15, including six resort staff and nine guests, gathered in the morning, spending five hours Coral Planting & Coral Reef Cleaning. The motivated group headed to nearby Lo Lana Bay, planting an impressive 80 coral branches from the resort Marine Discovery Centre’s dedicated nursery, as well as Maya Bay which is currently closed to visitors to allow for endangered coral reefs to recover. In the afternoon, resort managers were able to get involved too, with 30 staff and six guests spending an hour and a half Mangrove Planting & Local Village Cleaning, adding up to 54-hours of manpower. The team planted an incredible 100 mangroves from the resort nursery in the neighbouring mangrove forest.

Earth Day is the world’s largest environmental movement and is marked globally on 22 April each year. Close to a billion people, in over 190 countries, take part in annual events on this date, with Earth Day celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020.
